At age 28, Raquel Tulk is at the head of Viita Protection, a thriving small business that specializes in bladder leakage protection undergarments. The young entrepreneur now sells her products across the country and in the United States. In fact, she won the prize for the best business concept at the summer 2017 Accolades Gala. A meeting with an ambitious and generous young leader.
Bladder leakage protection undergarments are often perceived as unappealing and meant for older women. How does your line change the game?
Our product range is the only reusable one of its category, while everything else on the market is disposable. Our undergarments are elegant, comfortable and have an integrated absorbent pad that keeps you dry for eight hours. I closely follow trends and I’m aware of new textile performance technologies. I travel to learn and draw inspiration from major fashion trends. We offer undergarments women and men want to wear. We offer two elegant models for women (one high-waist and the other low-waist, offered in black and beige) and a black mid-thigh boxer for men. They revolutionize a category that had, until now, experienced no innovation. They also carry a message: that bladder leakage is not a disease and is just a part of women and men’s lives.
Who is the target audience of your undergarments?
They are for women and men who care about their appearance and wish for peace of mind and a dignified bladder leakage solution. Society still believes only a small part of the population is affected, but figures indicate otherwise: One out of three women will experience bladder leakage throughout her life. 60% of pregnant women will experience leakages throughout their pregnancy and most will have some after giving birth. Natural ageing is also a factor that encourages bladder leakage. Our high-quality range meets these important needs in an effective and innovative way with its patented technology, while respecting everyone’s dignity. Your products are distributed across Quebec and Canada, but also in the United States.
How do you explain your skyrocketing growth?
The rapid growth of our business can primarily be explained by the high quality of our technology, which was meticulously tested and approved before being put on the market. My drive to effect change as an entrepreneur also has a lot to do with it! After I appeared on the show Dans l’oeil du dragon, I produced 1,500 undergarments and sold them in less than two months via my website alone, without any advertising. That means there was a serious need for a practical, elegant and accessible product for all. Jean Coutu pharmacies then opened their doors to me in 300 of their branches. Today, we are present at 1,500 points of sale in Canada and 5,000 in the United States.
Where do you see Viita Protection ten years from now?
We have just signed a contract to export to Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. In ten years, I hope my products will be sold all over the world. I would also like our technology to be used for many other things because it has incredible potential. Women’s well-being is also important to me: I want women to know a dignified solution exists for them. We’re selling self-confidence and human dignity. I aspire for Viita Protection to become a leader in the bladder leakage protection product market. That would contribute to changing people’s lives for the better.
