On one side, the sea carves out the coastline’s cliffs. On the border with Spain and all along the coastline that follows the Ria Formosa, the waters are calm and warm. They become rougher and colder as you move from east to west towards Sagres, the westernmost point of Europe. The Algarve preserves the heritage of the Moors and the spirit of the fishing folk. It is from here, in the 15th century, that Portuguese sailors set out to discover the world. Tourists will find idyllic beaches and benefit from pleasant temperatures year-round.

SALINAS

In Algarve, there is a long tradition of salt extraction. The Salmarim society still respects the artisanal methods of the past. First you extract the salt flower, then the common salt. Plan a visit and adventure into the salinas of the Sapal de Castro Marim Nature Reserve.

BEACHES

the western part of Algarve, the Barlavento, bounded by cliffs created by erosion, the waters
are rougher and the waves are a challenge to surfers. From one side to the other, here are some beaches to explore: Praia Verde, Falésia, Santa Eulália, Alvor, Carvoeiro, Rocha, Meia Praia, Ponta da Piedade, Odeceixe, Amado.

This is the largest region of Portugal, where the plain reaches as far as the eye can see. Alentejo is ochre, brown and gold. Time goes by slowly here; the earth is in no hurry to give up its fruit. Summers are dry and scorching. Winters, cold and harsh. In the past, during periods of scarcity, bread was the basis of several dishes that can still be found on tables today—delicious! The landscape is scattered with Roman and Arab ruins, fortified towns, castles and convents. So many stories from a rich history.

EXPERIENCES

DOURO AZUL CRUISES

www.douroazul.com

It became a permanent home to black-cloaked students and the Coimbra fado that is an integral part of the university’s traditions. It was also the scene of the ill-fated love of Inês de Castro and King Peter I of Portugal, and of Queen Isabel’s miracle of changing the bread for the poor into roses. The lagoon near the city of Aveiro, plied by small moliceiro boats for collecting seaweed, shows another side of local traditions. And it would be sinful not to taste such baking specialties as ovos moles (egg yolk confection) or pão de ló (sponge cake)!

As the plane descends towards the city, one quickly sees why the light of Lisbon, on a background of fado music, is so highly celebrated. Destroyed in 1755 by a powerful earthquake, the city was rebuilt in pure Pombaline style. Crossed by the Tagus River, Lisbon is a city of seven hills where the smell of grilled sardines fills the air of its distinctive neighbourhoods. It has inspired and still emulates the poetry of Fernando Pessoa, who famously wrote, “God wills, man dreams, the work is born.”
