The 32nd annual Palm Beach International Boat Show took place from March 23 to 26 2017 on the beautiful Flagler Drive waterfront in downtown West Palm Beach. One of the 10 top nautical events in the world, this boat show features each year magnificent yachts measuring up to 300 feet in length and hundreds of boats of all sizes.

Among the prestigious builders represented at this yeah’s event were Amels, Feadship, Heesen, Moonen, and Palumbo.

“Palm Beach attracts an affluent audience of boat and yacht owners who typically do not visit the shows in Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach. Palm Beach is their show of choice,” says Andrew Doole, Senior Vice President and COO of Show Management, the company that manages and produces the show.

The Palm Beach show is exceptional in terms of the number of large yacht sales transactions that take place during the show, adds Doole.

Besides a large selection of boats and exhibitors, the show featured recreational and educational activities ranging from free fishing courses provided by Hook The Future to seminars organized by the IGFA School of Sportfishing to boat handling lessons. Visitors also enjoyed the friendly atmosphere created by on-site musicians and the always much appreciated floating refreshment areas. According to its organizers, this 32nd edition was a real success, which they hope to be able to replicate next year.

Over the past forty years, California has made great strides in the winemaking industry and its wines are gaining increased international recognition. The LUXE Magazine team toured the sumptuous Napa Valley region, about an hour from San Francisco. Here is our report.

With its Mediterranean climate, the Napa Valley is heaven for wine connoisseurs and gourmets alike. To tour the area, nothing beats taking the Silverado Trail. It’s a peaceful, picturesque road winding through the hollows in the hills on the eastern side of the valley, and it leads to the largest wineries, including those dotting the municipality of Calistoga. You also really shouldn’t miss visiting Chateau Montelena and Sterling Vineyards. The latter, built to resemble a Greek home, has an extraordinarily striking view over the Napa Valley. To reach the winery itself (for a taste of its famous chardonnay), you’ll take a cable car. As experiences go, it’s … intoxicating.

The wines aren’t the only things that are excellent in the Napa Valley. The food is just as good. The municipality of Yountville is especially renowned for its gastronomy, in particular because of the restaurant The French Laundry with its three Michelin stars. The village, another essential stop on a tour, was named for George Calvert Yount, the first man to plant grapevines in the valley in 1840.

We could go on forever about this magnificent region, but we’ve chosen to tell you about three of the highlights of our stay. As for the rest, all we can say is: go there yourself!

Calistoga Ranch

Calistoga Ranch is THE place to spend a night in the Napa Valley. The immense 157-acre ranch has 50 luxurious lodge-style villas and is a favourite of Hollywood stars. Spa treatments, a heated pool, a fitness room: everything is there to make your stay unforgettable. During the day, you can take part in a multitude of activities such as workshops on winemaking, culinary demonstrations, biking and hiking and even… hot air balloon rides!

Robert Mondavi Winery

Robert Mondavi wines (especially Woodbridge) are well known in Quebec and were the first to really compete with European wines. The late Robert Mondavi, a pioneer of Californian winemaking, founded his namesake winery in 1966. Cabernet, chardonnay, fumé blanc, merlot, pinot noir, rosé and sauvignon blanc: these are the varieties grown on his terroir, which now belongs to a large corporation specializing in the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages. You will enjoy wandering around, glass in hand, and admiring the beauty of the vines and the mountains that seem to go on forever. A dozen wines from this vineyard are available at the SAQ. Prices range from $11.45 to $457.

Davis Estates

Although its wines are not sold in Quebec, the Davis Estates winery is an essential stop on any Napa Valley tour. Mike, the kindly owner, will show you around his superb facility. Besides tasking the red wines (pinot noir, merlot and cabernet sauvignon), you can have a delicious meal in the wine cellar or on the covered patio.

Led by professionals

Our stay in the Napa Valley would not have been the same without Napa Valley Tours & Transportation, which drove us around the region, including San Francisco, in a brand new Lincoln Continental 2017. Our chauffeur, Anthony Roller, not only knows the city like the back of his hand but helped to make our stay a very pleasant one.

Xavier Roux is a French artist living in NYC, where he welcomed LUXE Magazine to a preview showing of his next exhibition, an in situ installation at the artist’s studio. The exhibition opens on November 18 2017.

What did you name this panoramic mural installation that covers the wall of your studio?

I titled this work Swimming Pool in tribute to Matisse’s La Piscine. I wanted to create the impression of immersion that you get when you dive into a pool. The colours are similar to the tones of light reflected in the blue water of the pool.

The effect is luminous and radiates trough the space. It’s like being surrounded by multiple windows, as if your drawings opened the walls like stained glass.

I have an intimate relationship with architecture. It’s a mnemonic and emotional relationship more than an aesthetic one. Certain spaces inspire me, comfort me. I project my interior space on the existing structure. That’s probably why I like spaces that create a sense of emptiness. I like cathedrals and swimming pools for that reason. As a matter of fact, I created a video (Agnus Dei) inspired by this theme over a decade ago.

We feel transformed by the experience. Rothko said “a painting is not a picture of an experience; it is an experience”

It’s interesting that you should quote Rothko. For the Rothko Chapel in Texas, he first created a mock-up of the chapel space in his studio before having an identical space built in Houston for his site-specific paintings. The choice of space for this exhibition led us to use my studio in order to preserve the experience of immersion in the artwork. So it’s a process very similar to Rothko’s.More generally, I consider the creative act as an experience. I do lots of participatory art projects precisely to enrich the public’s experience and allow it to view the work differently.

Your studio is a creative lab where all sorts of experiments take place. You repurpose machines created to erase all traces (Roombas), which you transform into machines to make traces!

I consider creative work to be very similar to scientific research. I’m very interested in fundamental research, especially in particle physics and neuroscience. The similarity in approaches comes down to the very nature of research: the researcher, like the artist, doesn’t know what he’s looking for and is even less aware of what he’ll find. We start from a hypothesis, an idea, and we try to validate it and to see where it leads us. It’s a playful job that requires great openness of spirit and lots of imagination.

It’s also a job that requires a good sense of humour to be able to accept the mistakes that are the breeding ground of great discoveries and great creations. Discovery and creation are in fact one and the same thing.

After almost a year of major renovations, the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel reopened its doors last July. The genius behind this transformation is Sid Lee Architecture, which was in charge of the hotel’s new positioning and provided interior design and architecture services in partnership with Architecture 49.

“The establishment reasserted its place as an urban facility serving a local and international clientele. It’s a ?third place? where people can go every day, both to conduct business and participate in events or entertainment,” says Jean Pelland, Architect and Senior Partner at Sid Lee Architecture.

Inaugurated in 1958, the hotel was, for many years, one of the largest modern hotels in the world. Great musicians such as Oscar Peterson performed there, and its list of parties, balls and prestigious events attended by heads of state, royalty and businesspeople is impressive.

Today, the hotel pays tribute to its past by providing an inspiring space and new programming attuned to its Montreal character. Open to the city, it has living and working spaces for a local and international clientele.

The decor of its 950 guest rooms draws on the rich styles and patterns of the 1960s. The renowned Suite 1742, in which John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed for their famous bed-in, has also been redesigned. In remembrance of this historical event, the designers placed the furniture the same way the artists had at the time, notably placing the bed up against the window.

Avant-garde restaurants and business spaces

The Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel was transformed to accommodate a business clientele on the second and third floors: one is reserved for conventions, while the other is a veritable state-of-the-art business campus with a multitude of thematic meeting rooms.

In addition, three foodservices are now available for guests and the public: the Rosélys restaurant, a modern, chic and accessible bistro, the Kréma Café, and the Nacarat Bar, whose terrace overlooks René-Lévesque Boulevard.

By the end of the year, the hotel will also open its Artisan market, where the public will be able to stroll through a kitchen production area and enjoy watching food artisans at work in their daily activities.

Finally, in November 2017, the hotel will be officially crowned with its Espace C2. This glass-bodied area built on the 21st floor will accommodate up to 220 guests with a variety of available configurations. This addition will definitely position the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel as a vanguard institution in the world of conference centres.

Vincent Drolet, President and COO of the Circo de Bakuza communications agency, and Nic Urli, founder of their high-end event production arm and owner of the restaurants Jatoba, Flyjin, HÀ, and Blumenthal as well as the École Privée nightclub, are partnering with the Octane Racing Group, promoter of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada in Montreal.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE OCTANE RACING GROUP?

I have now been involved in the creation of events surrounding the Grand Prix du Canada, particularly those taking place at Auberge St-Gabriel, for the past eight years. Last year, I worked with Vincent Drolet to create a force capable of putting large-scale events together during the Formula 1 weekend, a kind of festival surrounding the Grand Prix event. We created the ABGE brand at Auberge St-Gabriel in partnership with the Octane Racing Group, the official promoter of the Grand Prix du Canada. We were so successful last year that we decided to add several new events to program.

IN WHAT WAY ARE THE OFFICIAL EVENTS YOU ARE PRESENTING DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS?

Our partnership involves three entities that all possess a state-of-the-art expertise and enjoy strong credibility in their specialty. Circo de Bakuza, for one, handled the organization of the opening and closing ceremonies of Euro 2016 and the Jeux du Québec. They possess incredible local and international expertise as an event producer. As for me, I’ve been a producer of high-end events in Montreal for the past eight years. I’m also a partner in multiple restaurants, including Flyjin, Jatoba, Hà and Blumenthal. Finally, the Octane Racing Group is the promoter of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. So our events are the only ones that carry the official seal besides the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve events. That guarantees quality and a client base.

TELL US ABOUT THE GRAND EVENING, THE F1 OPENING GALA.

It is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year in Montreal. This year, it will take place in the Iberville Passenger Terminal, a magnificent brand-new venue. The event celebrating the opening of festivities will be attended by race car drivers, local and international celebrities, and the Montreal business community in a unique and festive atmosphere. The evening will begin with a red carpet followed by a cocktail party and a dinner. Some of Canada’s best chefs will be on hand to create the menu, and there will be breathtaking artistic performances. Also, this year, part of the proceeds will be donated to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

ARCHITECTURAL GENIUS

Every project by American Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is both very personal and representative of a whole era. Wright’s creations are remarkable because of their exceptional understanding of the ecological environment as well as by their use of steel and glass, and they both helped usher in the modern era and assured him a place in the annals of architectural engineering. Prepared thanks to an unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives kept at Taliesin West, the architect’s winter residence in Arizona, the collection is an in-depth exploration of Wright’s projects, from his first Prairie houses to his more recent works, including his concept of a Usonian house.
